Encyclopedia : H : HO : HON : Honesty bars
An honesty bar is an unattended beverage bar where payment is left to the patron. Honesty bars differ significantly from mini-bars in that they are open to multiple patrons, which makes individual consumption impossible to determine.
Honesty bars are rare but occasionally found in smaller hotels, boutique hotels, and the executive floors of fine hotels. No staff attend the bar and therefore it is left to the honesty of the guest to report his or her own consumption. It gives the advantage to a guest to pour, make, or take a drink any time, keeping a tab for himself or herself for the length of the stay. Generally drinks are cheaper in a honesty bar, since no staff must be paid to attend the area continuously.
Drinks found in an honesty bar are generally the regular brand with a standard bar setup. The bar is commonly be fitted with a refrigerator, an ice maker, shakers, blenders, etc. It is common to find a manual of basic cocktails for the guest to enjoy.
