Hordes of Chaos

Encyclopedia : H : HO : HOR : Hordes of Chaos

The Hordes of Chaos is the first of two rulebooks detailing the armies of Chaos in the world of Warhammer. Hordes of Chaos is devoted to "Mortals," which are the human worshippers of Chaos (the brutal tribesmen referred to in-game as "Marauders") and the devoted worshippers (Chaos Warriors & Champions), the Daemonic legions, and Chaos Magic.

The army can be played in one of two ways, depending on what type of creature commands it: a mortal leader (either a Lord, Champion, or Sorcerer of Chaos) commands a mortal army, while a Daemonic leader (a Daemon Prince or a Greater Daemon of the Ruinous Powers) commands a daemonic army. In a mortal army, Warriors, Knights, and Marauders are Core (essential components of the force), while daemonic units (Khorne Bloodletters, Nurgle Plaguebringers, Tzeentch Horrors, and Slaanesh Daemonettes) are Special; in a daemonic army, those places are reversed.

The army of mortals consists of mainly mortal units with perhaps 1 or 2 units of daemons. The main force usually is units of chaos warriors backed up with savage marauders. Chaos knights are extremely powerful with amazing hitting abiliy though powerful they are expensive both points wise and in price. A chaos army is generally led by a lord (although smaller armies sometimes only have an Exalted Champion, especially those of Tzeentch) and could be accompanied by heros.

The Hordes of Chaos have several special characters:
