Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, Sunderland South is to be merged with elements of the existing Houghton and Washington East seat to create this new seat.

The following electoral wards have been used in the creation of Houghton and Sunderland South
- Copt Hill, Doxford, Hetton, Houghton, St Chad’s, Sandhill, Shiney Row, Silksworth.
