Humber Valley

The Humber Valley is a region in Western Newfoundland. The valley begins with the Upper Humber River, on the shores of this you find the Town of Reidville and the farming community of Cormack. The river runs along to dump into Deer Lake at the town of Deer Lake. This lake continues up the valley passing the local service districts of St. Jude’s and Pynn’s Brook, and the Town of Pasadena. The lake ends and turns back into the Lower Humber River at the local service district of Little Rapids and the Humber Valley Resort, a golfing development. The river continues up the valley through the Town of Steady Brook and empties into the Bay of Islands at Corner Brook and Massey Drive.

The Humber Valley Region has a population of about 36,000 people, this is the major hub for Western Newfoundland. It is considered one of the most picturesque areas of the province.

The Extended Humber

The Humber Valley region also sometime stretches on to include the Town of Howley, and the Towns of Jackson's Arm and Hampden.

The Great Humber Joint Council

The Great Humber Joint Council is a group that has formed to by various towns in the Humber Valley Region. The Great Humber Joint Council Consists of:

Member Towns

Past Active Members Observing Members Non-Active Members (1) GBS is not in the region that is generally described as the GHJC, but it asked for membership and the borders were shifted to accommodate this addition.

(2) These places are not registered towns. They are Local Service District's.

Electoral Districts

On a federal level, this area is found in the riding of Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte, Newfoundland and Labrador, but provincially it is divided into four districts Humber Valley, Humber East, Humber West, and Bay of Islands.

Employment

People in the region work in many different areas like the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Mill which is the major lifeblood of the region, the mill also runs the Deer Lake hydro-electric facility. The Deer Lake Regional Airport employs many along with the various government departments and facilities both provincial and federal. Also things like agriculture play a major role in the employment of the region.
