The Hummingbird Centre is a major performing arts venue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
History
Formerly known as the O'Keefe Centre (for Carling O'Keefe Breweries) and built by Earle Morgan and Page & Steele in 1960 for horse breeder and developer (Don Mills) E.P. Taylor.
The Centre has been used by the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company.
The Centre name changed in 1996 as a result of a large donation from Toronto-based software solution company Hummingbird Limited.
With the anticipated move of the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in 2006, the Hummingbird Centre has enlisted architect Daniel Libeskind for a redesign of the complex into a new tourist destination. While still in the early stages, the plan would involve the addition of a new condominium tower as well as other uses.
