Linguistics & Pronunciation

Ly is the twentieth letter of the Hungarian alphabet. It is pronounced (using English pronunciation with letter romanization) "ei" in the alphabet, but just "y" when spoken in a word. It is now pronounced exactly the same as the Hungarian letter "j". In history, it used to be pronounced "alya", but that was lost quite long ago. Using the IPA phoneme, it can be written as /j/. Using the IPA phoneme, the historical "ly" can be written as /ʎ/.

Usage

It is only used and pronounced in this way in Hungarian. One has to remember that in Hungarian, even if two characters are put together to make a different sound, they are considered one letter, and even acronyms keep the letter intact.

Examples

These examples are Hungarian words that use the letter ly, with the English pronunciation with letter romanization following.
