Vocabulary of Islam |
His actions at Karbala on the day of 'Ashurra have made him a hero and example to many Shi'ites.
Al-Hurr was a well known man in Kufa. He was selected by Ubayd-Allah ibn Ziyad, the then Governor of Kufa, to lead a specially chosen contingent which was sent against Husayn ibn Ali. Al-Hurr was never aware that the mission was intended to end in the death of Husayn, and when he realised this, he asked the commander of the contingent, Umar ibn Sa'ad, if he really intended to kill this man. Umar ibn Sa'ad answered that he did intend to kill him, and subsequently Hurr defected and joined the tiny army of Husayn. He was then martyred(20 October 680 AD).
A shrine has been built over his grave, in the city of Karbala.
