Hyacinthaceae
Encyclopedia : H : HY : HYA : Hyacinthaceae
Hyacinthaceae is the botanical name of a family of flowering plants. A family of this name has been recognized by quite a few taxonomists, but the circumscription has varied.
The APG II system, of 2003, does not recognize the family as such, but allows it to be segregated from the family Asparagaceae, as an optional segregate. This is a change from the APG system, of 1998, which firmly did accept this family. The family is placed in the order Asparagales, in the clade monocots.
Most of the genera then included in the family have been classified in family Liliaceae, at some point in time. They are herbaceous perennials that grow from bulbs, and include several popular garden plants, including Hyacinth (Hyacinthus), grape hyacinth (Muscari), bluebell (Hyacinthoides) and squill (Scilla).
Current research in molecular systematics is leading to further revision and some genera that were formerly placed within the family (for example Chlorogalum and Camassia) are now placed in other families within the order Asparagales.
