Hyde County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 1,671. Its county seat is Highmore6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,244 km² (867 mi²). 2,230 km² (861 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it (0.65%) is water.

Townships

The county is divided into twotownships: Valley and William Hamilton; and three areas of unorganized territory: Central Hyde, Crow Creek, and North Hyde.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,671 people, 679 households, and 456 families residing in the county. The population density was 1/km² (2/mi²). There were 769 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.08% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 7.96% Native American, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 679 households out of which 29.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% were married couples living together, 6.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.80% were non-families. 30.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county, the population was spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 22.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.00 males.
