Hydrocotyle umbellata, is an aquatic, or water-loving, perennial that thrives in warm, temperate regions. Its is known as dollarweed, marsh or water pennywort or navelwort although the latter names are also used for unrelated plants such as Umbilicus rupestris. It is a common weed of lawns that grows best in moist clay soils, but can also survive in loamy compacted soils.
It can easily be prevented by not overwatering and by mowing high and by the careful use of broad-leaved herbicides.
