The Hyperion, currently commanded by Jim Raynor, is a battlecruiser in the StarCraft universe with a long and checkered history.
The Hyperion, originally commanded by Pollock Rimes, started as a Terran Confederacy battlecruiser that crash-landed in Umojan Protectorate territory, out of the range of Confederate hailing frequencies. It became part of Arcturus Mengsk's Korhalian rebellion after Mengsk had allied with the Umojan Protectorate. He was then located in Umoja.The Terran Confederacy, fearing that the Korhalian rebels had allied with the Umojans, attacked Korhal IV with 1,000 Apocalypse-class nuclear missiles. It wiped out life on the surface of Korhal.
Mengsk renamed the vessel the Hyperion and made it the flagship of his very small fleet. He betrayed his second-in-command Sarah Kerrigan during the attack on Tarsonis, abandoning her to the Zerg. Jim Raynor hijacked the Hyperion (from Dylar IV, according to ) as an act of revenge.
The Hyperion is sometimes compared to the Millennium Falcon of Star Wars. It is an old and faithful ship that has seen countless modifications and updates. It has participated in most of the crucial battles of the sector, including the fall of the Zerg Overmind on Aiur and many battles against the forces of the United Earth Directorate and Infested Kerrigan during the Brood War. At the end of that war, Hyperion, under the command of James Raynor, was the command ship and home base of Raynor's Raiders.
Engineer's Mate Aaren Ruth has been to Shakuras, suggesting that the battlecruiser had visited there.
Game Unit
The Hyperion is tougher than the typical battlecruiser, and has more hit points and a less damaging laser cannon than the Norad II. However, the Hyperion has a faster rate of fire than the Norad II making it a unit on par with the Norad II.References
