Hyperoartia
Encyclopedia : H : HY : HYP : Hyperoartia
Hyperoartia is a group of jawless fishes that includes the modern lampreys and their fossil relatives. An example of an early hyperoartian from the fossil record is Endeiolepis, a fish with a hypocercal tail that lived during the Late Devonian Period. A few fossils are also known from the Mazon Creek rocks of the Carboniferous Period. The only surviving hyperoartians today are lampreys classified in the Petromyzontiformes.
