I-No

Encyclopedia : I : IN : INO : I-No

I-No is a character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series, making her first appearance as a boss of the third game, Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival; unlike bosses in previous games, she is freely playable from the start. Very little is known about her; in fact, her profile in Guilty Gear XX's profile consists entirely of "UNKNOWN!!" repeated several times over. Information given thus far is also somewhat unclear as to the nature and origin of her hat, though it has become a matter of much fan speculation. The hat resembles a bright red version of a witch's hat. She also seems to derive pleasure from tormenting Dizzy.

Gameplay

Because I-No's forward dash causes her to fly up, one of her strong points is her ability to confuse the opponent and get in free hits because the opponent is blocking incorrectly. This also gives her a rather easy time throwing in the air, as unlike standard air dashes, her air throw can be used during this dash. In addition, her projectile musical note attack allows her to potentially "cross-up" the opponent and score a free attack combo, and because she can control the note, it gives her good control of the battlefield (especially the air) after knocking down the opponent. One of I-No's major strengths is her ability to control the air. With her rising dash, air rushes, supers, and the chemical love attack, the top half of the screen is hers to control. Players that are unfamiliar with her tend to have a hard time getting used to the rising dash and its applications. Tiger-kneeing is also very useful with I-No's aerial movelist. Advanced combos tend to involve FRCing her "Chemical Love" projectile.

Boss I-No

I-No is also the final boss of the arcade mode and some of the story modes in GGXX. It is important to distinguish her from the playable I-No. She has powers available in her gold version, such as regeneration, gaining tension extremely quickly and her Anti-depression Scale (214P) always lands 5 hits. The AI/EX specific inclusion of the attack "Megalomania" make her severely unbalanced. Since this rendition is completely inaccessible to players, I-No is still tournament legal. In Guilty Gear XX Slash, EX I-no has gained the ability to use "Megalomania".

Story

I-No is actually a servant of "That Man", dedicated -- or so we are led to believe -- to his goals and ideals, though it is never entirely made clear what the former are. She spends most of her Story Mode in Guilty Gear XX manipulating the various cast members against each other, including giving fake bounty lists that consist entirely of other cast members to Jam Kuradoberi and Bridget. In the ending where she fights Sol Badguy -- as well as various other characters' endings -- she is captured by That Man and Raven, who evidently intend to punish her. I-No protests that she only wanted to remove those who stood in her boss' way, but That Man proclaims that they're actually beneficial to what he has in mind for the world. In her other, less likely endings, she fights and defeats Dizzy and May, either subsequently becoming overwhelmed by Dizzy's power, or kidnapping May with the apparent intentions of bringing her to That Man.

Music References

Her name is pronounced "ee-no", and it is very likely a reference to Brian Eno. Her character is modelled after Shiina Ringo, a Japanese singer who shares both her characteristic mole and guitar. Her attacks "Chemical Love" and "Last Will and Testament" share the names of a Stevie Wonder song and an album by The Lurkers, respectively. Her boss theme Midnight Carnival contains clear musical references to the song "Kurenai" by the J-Rock band, X Japan.

Her regular GGXX stage shows a placard on the far right side bearing the word "Innuendo," the name of the fourteenth studio album by Queen.

Also, she explicitly uses an Archtop guitar as her weapon.
