The elite IG-100 Magna Guards are fictional droids seen in the movie [[Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith]], [[Star Wars: Clone Wars|The Clone Wars]] microseries, and the Republic Commando video game. They are the personal bodyguards to General Grievous who wield electrified staffs that can block lightsabers. They are described as being an IG-100 series bodyguard droid, built by the same manufacturer (Holowan Mechanicals) that built the feared bounty hunters, IG-88, who pursued Han Solo under the employ of Darth Vader.
When General Grievous was transformed into a cyborg, he could no longer have a bodyguard of warriors from his native planet. In response, Darth Sidious ordered the InterGalactic Banking Clan to create the IG-100 series to serve as General Grievous' bodyguards. The Magna guard was developed by Holowan because of the companies' debt to the InterGalactic Banking Clan, who released them from this encumberment by tasking them to build the ultimate war droid for the newly mechanized General Grievous. These elite warriors were not cheap to produce, in fact they effectively bankrupted the Trade Federation. The plan was a great success, and the General was quite pleased with them and wished to make them his trained warriors, not mindless drones. Grievous made them more like his comrades by presenting them with the garbs of the native warriors of Grievous' home planet Kalee and training them himself in combat practices.
The IG-100 Magna Guard series, powerful battle machines standing nearly two metres tall, were some of the most deadly battle droids in the galaxy, wielding spinning, and searing, electrostaffs as its personal weapon of choice. These hand to hand weapons, though impractical in blocking supersonic blaster shots could serve their primary purpose, blocking lightsabers and eliminating the bearer. The design of the droid allowed it to have super human agility and leaping power, something that the clumsy, battle droids could never have achieved. To supplement its melee combat capability, some of the more heavy weapons oriented MagnaGuards are also implanted with twin guided missile launcher magazines placed on their backs, which can be used to destroy small armored vehicles or groups of infantry that stood between these droids and their objective. The droids are remarkably resilient, even for a droid design. Even more frightening, these mechanical monsters are capable of surviving decapitation while still able to fight effectively, due to back up processors in their chests. This allows them to continue fighting even if they have been beheaded or sustained traumatic amputations. Furthermore, their hands can detach from their sockets and attach to other surfaces or objects. Equally deadly is the combat programming of the droids. The MagnaGuards were originally programmed with knowledge of a huge variety of lethal combat styles. However, General Grievous had their memories wiped and instead trained them personally.
A typical strategy of these droids is to fight in groups of two, weakening opponents from group attacks until finally exhausting them to the point where they are easy prey.
There are four models of MagnaGuard. General Grievous, under the orders of the mysterious Darth Sidious, used several MagnaGuards in his kidnapping of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine just before the end of The Clone Wars. Shortly afterward, however, many of Grievous prized warriors were cut down or destroyed by the Jedi. Two of them dueled with Jedi Master Kit Fisto but were defeated by the powerful Jedi. Later, several MagnaGuards helped Grievous dispose of Palpatine's Emperor's Royal Guard. Two survived the battle on Coruscant and dueled with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on the Invisible Hand, but these too were defeated. Later, four MagnaGuards tried to attack Master Obi-Wan Kenobi at his confrontation of the General on Utapau, but were dispatched with a falling metal container.
Grievous oversaw the creation of many of these robots, but only brought his elite with him on his personal campaigns such as the kidnapping of Supreme Chancellor Papatine at the Battle of Coruscant. Grievous refused to have them repainted in any way, insisting their chipped paintwork made them appear more fearsome.
The design for the Magna Guards was also one of the concept designs for General Grievous himself.
