The origin of the game is, as with most drinking games, unknown. The rules employed vary from group to group; below are the most universally applicable rules.
Players are arranged into something resembling a circle. The game is started with one playing saying "To my left/right, a game of 'I never'" followed by a simple statement. For example "I have never edited Wikipedia." In this case anyone who has edited Wikipedia must drink a pre-agreed upon amount (usually a finger of their drink).
Play then continues around the circle and the next person makes a statement. There is no official end point of the game, and it usually ends simply when everyone playing is either too bored or drunk to continue.
A claim to invention of this game is made by a group called The Hatters while on a stag weekend in 1991 - [link]
Common Variants
Common variants on the rules include:
- If only one player drinks for any particular statement, they must tell the group the story
- The person making the statement may say something that they themselves have done (usually, this tactic is employed to embarrass another player.)
- If one wishes to drink due to genuine thirst, one must clearly signal to the group that you are merely "Drinking."
- Starting with one chair fewer than the number of players, the standing player starts the game. Those who have stand up, consume the penalty, and then swap seats with another standing person, including the original "stander". This can lead to absolute chaos as the players become more inebriated.
- If no-one in the group has done the particular statement, then the person who made it must drink.
- A version of the game can be played sans alcohol. This version is more frequently used by teenagers or children who are under the legal drinking age, or by people who are bored and have nothing to drink. Everyone will hold up ten fingers and, instead of drinking, if you have done something, you put down a finger. To extend the life of this game, once you have all ten fingers down, you can put one back up if you have done it.
- In some circles, information revealed during a game may not be shared beyond those who participated. "What happens in I Never stays in I Never."
Purpose
Whilst most drinking games have the sole purpose of getting their players drunk, "I never" can serve another purpose. The choice of "I never"s can be such that a player deliberately embarrasses another player - through knowledge of past misdeeds - or learns something interesting about a friend. This can evolve into standard "I never"s being said whenever certain people are present.
Trivia
- A game of "I Never" can be seen in an episode of Lost, entitled "Outlaws", featuring Sawyer and Kate discussing their past sins and secrets.
- A game of "I Never" can also be seen in an episode of Family Guy. Revolving around sexual acts, the game sees Quagmire drinking far more than his friends.
- A game of "I Never" can be seen in an episode of Veronica Mars between Veronica, Logan, Duncan and Lilly.
