Iain MacMillan (October 20, 1938 – May 8, 2006) was a British photographer best known for taking the cover of The Beatles' Abbey Road, easily one of the most recognizable album covers in music history.
The famous Abbey Road album cover was taken at 10 AM on August 8, 1969. MacMillan had acquired the job to take the album cover photo by John Lennon. The photographer, who balanced himself on a stepladder in the middle of the street to take the photo, was given only ten minutes to take the photo. The Beatles crossed back and forth across the crosswalk and a number of photographs were taken. The Beatles themselves chose their favorite for use on the record sleeve.
MacMillan would again work with the Beatles after their breakup on at least two occasions. Once to help design artwork for John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas, War is Over" single; and with Paul McCartney for his "Paul is Live" album, which featured a remake of the classic Abbey Road image; this time with McCartney being pulled across the Abbey Road crosswalk by a Sheep Dog.
MacMillan died in Scotland after a long battle with Cancer.
