Id (Unix)

Encyclopedia : I : ID : IDU : Id (Unix)

The correct title of this } is }}}. The initial letter is capitalized due to [Naming conventions #Lower case first lettertechnical restrictions].
In computer software, id is a program in Unix-like operating systems that prints the UID of the account of which the program is executed by.

Example:

foobar@darkstar:~$ id
uid=1016(foobar) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
The root account has a UID of 0.

The whoami utility has been obsoleted by the id utility and displays a user's ID as a name.

The command

id -un
is equivalent, however
id -p
is suggested for normal interactive use.
