Idlewild is an upcoming feature film written and directed by Bryan Barber and starring André Benjamin and Antwan A. Patton of OutKast fame. Produced by HBO Films, Idlewild will be released on August 25, 2006 by Universal Pictures. The cast also includes Terrence Howard, Paula Jai Parker, Cicely Tyson, Ben Vereen, Patti LaBelle, Ving Rhames, Macy Gray, Faizon Love, Bruce Bruce, and others.
Formerly titled My Life in Idlewild, the film is a musical set in the prohibition-era American South. A speakeasy performer and club manager named Rooster (Big Boi) must contend with gangsters who have their eyes on the club, while his piano player and partner Percival (André Benjamin) must choose between his love, Angel (Paula Patton) or his obligations to his father (Ben Vereen). The film is set to a modern hip hop score with 1930's blues influences.
