If Only You Knew was a single written and produced primarily by Dexter Wansel and Cynthia Biggs for American R&B singer Patti LaBelle's sixth solo album, I'm in Love Again. It was released as the album's second single in 1983, spending four weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B charts during January and February 1984.
Writing
Following her success during the 1970s with the group, LaBelle, Patti LaBelle signed a solo deal with Epic Records. LaBelle endured a series of commercial failures, though gaining critical acclaim. Desiring popular success, she signed with Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, then CBS. Producer Dexter Wansel and songwriter Cynthia Biggs collaborated with lyrics and instrumental composition of the song with Gamble gaining writing credit by making minor edit to the lyrics. If You Only Knew stayed at number one on the U.S. R&B charts for four weeks and peaked number 46 on the U.S. pop charts in early 1984.See also
