It was founded on November 9, 1965 as a merger between Il Sole, founded in 1865, and 24 ore, founded in 1946. Newspaper main headquarter is located in Milan. Total circulation is about 390,000.

Il Sole 24 ore reports on business, politics, commercial and labour law news, corporate news and features extensive share and financial product listings on a separate daily supplement: Finanza e Mercati.The newspaper publishes a wide range of weekly supplements like:
