Illegal logging

Encyclopedia : I : IL : ILL : Illegal logging

Illegal logging is a term used to describe logging operations that government agencies have not authorized. It includes logging in national parks and other protected areas without government authorization or in level exceeding approved limits, or where such authorization was obtained by bribery. It is commonly assumed that illegal logging in poorer countries takes place in response to poverty and results in land conversion to other uses like agriculture. A recent study showed that very little illegal logged material reaches international trade and is instead consumed domestically.
