Imperial Courts is a public housing project located in the Watts area of South Los Angeles (see South Central Los Angeles).
The federally-subsidized project of 498 units was completed in May 1944. The project is overwhelmingly inhabited by African-Americans; in 1991 they constituted 88 percent of the population. [link] Parts of the motion picture Training Day were filmed in Imperial Courts to give the movie a true-to-life project setting.
The neighborhood is also notorious as the home of the PJ Watts Crips gang.
Education
Imperial Courts is zoned to Grape Elementary School, Markham Middle School, and Jordan High School. All three are operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District.1990's:
