The United States Navy actually intended to use the song in promotional advertising - until protests erupted over using taxpayer money for a music video.
Pop-culture occurrences
- The Captain Jack version was in the game Dance Dance Revolution.
- The song is played in The Simpsons episode "Simpson Tide" and it ends as a submarine submerges (bringing the Village People with it).
- The finale of the 2000 Leslie Nielsen comedy features a performance of "In the Navy" sung by the Three Tenors.
- A modernized music video version of the song was in the end credits of the movie Down Periscope.
- Was used in the episode of the wedding of Lt. J.G. Bud Roberts and Ensign Harriet Simms in the series JAG. Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb's high collar white tunic was missing (the dry cleaners gave it to the wrong customer, who happened to be a male stripper). Rabb found it while the customer was stripping to the song of In the Navy. Major MacKenzie, Simms and her mother were in the audience.
