Inanimate Carbon Rod

Encyclopedia : I : IN : INA : Inanimate Carbon Rod

For rods used in nuclear power plants, see Control rod.
The Inanimate Carbon Rod is a stick of carbon that appeared as a character (so to speak) in an episode of The Simpsons ("Deep Space Homer"). An inanimate rod also appears to fly into Homer's shirt during the show's opening sequence, but it is not clear whether it is made of carbon (or, for example, enriched uranium).

The Rod once defeated Homer Simpson for Worker of the Week at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, even despite 'Union Rule 26', which reads: "[e]very employee must win 'Worker of the Week' at least once, regardless of gross incompetence, obesity, or rank odor." This caused Homer to become angry, and he subsequently drank heavily at Moe's Tavern. He then called NASA and complained about the boring nature of Space Shuttle launches, leading to a new 'average-naut' program.

Later in the episode, after a spectacular training montage, Homer is on a space shuttle with Race Banyon and Buzz Aldrin. The shuttle's door must be closed in order for the shuttle to re-enter Earth's atmosphere, but Homer has broken the handle. In an attempt to bash Race's face in with the rod, Homer inadvertently solves the problem, accidentally jamming the door shut with the Inanimate Carbon Rod. [link]

Upon return to earth, Homer is yet again upstaged by the Rod. The population praises the Rod, not Homer, placing it on the cover of Time magazine: "In Rod We Trust". Additionally, the Carbon Rod receives its own ticker-tape parade.

Later appearance

The Inanimate Carbon Rod appears again in the season 14 episode "C.E. D'oh!".

Mr. Burns displays an organizational chart of the power plant's internal hierarchy. Homer is the lowest-ranked employee, just below the Rod.

In [The Simpsons: Guide to Springfield'] by Matt Groening, Reverend Lovejoy reports there is a Springfield church, split off from the Western Reformed Presbylutherans, which worships the Inanimate Carbon Rod.
