Roorkee is a small township in Uttaranchal, India. Despite its size, it has produced engineers of fine quality from the erstwhile University of Roorkee, now known as Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the institute has played a vital role in research and providing technical manpower and know-how to the country. The Institute ranks among the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It is considered a trendsetter in education and research in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

The institute celebrated its 150th anniversary in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The ordinance was converted into an act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an "Institution of National Importance".

Roorkee offers Bachelor's degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and Planning. IIT Roorkee also started Dual Degree Programs (B.Tech+M.Tech) in 2003. Presently these programs are offered in three Engineering disciplines. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all departments and research centers.

Prior to being converted into an IIT, the University selected students through a highly rigorous entrance exam, REE (Roorkee Entrance Exam) conducted on an All-India level. The Institute continues the legacy by admitting students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centers all over India. The Institute is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars.

Heritage

The Roorkee College was established in 1847 AD as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It was given the status of University by Act No. IX of 1948 of the United Province (Uttar Pradesh) in recognition of its performance, potential and keeping in view the needs of post-independent India. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949 elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India.

Since its establishment, the university has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower, know-how and pursuit of research to the country. It ranks among the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trendsetter in the area of education, research, and the field of science, technology, and engineering.

On 21st September 2001, the University was declared an "Institute of National Importance", by a bill passed in the Indian Parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. Thus, another jewel was added to the already glittering crown in the history of this institute.

IIT Roorkee is one of the best located campuses among all IITs if one likes mountain ranges and natural features around. The campus is about 360 acres (1.5 km²) in size and is lush and green. Roorkee is located at the foot hills of the Himalayan ranges and is surrounding by places of tourist interest like Mussorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar.

The technical fest of IIT Roorkee is called "Cognizance" and the cultural fest is called "Thomso". There are two campus magazines brought out by the students of IITR namely "Kshitij" and "Watch Out".The Information Management Group [IMG], a Part of Information SuperHighway Centre, is fully managed by the students and hold responsibility for the Institute Website, Intranet Site, and other web-services.This is completely managed by undergraduate students at Roorkee. Fine Arts
Fine art section of IIT Roorkee gives an opportunity to all the students to explore and extol the various facets of human life and nature.

Gardening Section
The gardening section of IIT Roorkee has not only lived up to this definition but has provided it with a new dimension by giving it a new tool in the form of pollution control. It has achieved this through involving hard-working, determined students who are passionate about keeping the flora of the country alive.

Philately And Numismatics
Philately and numismatics section deals with stamps and the coins. the Stanley gibbon's catalogue, the best for stamp issues and coin catalogues ,magazines are available for reference.

Photography
Photography section of IITR instills in you the ability to know what objects may be, apart from receptivity of our senses. helping the young budding engineers of IIT ROORKEE in laying down the intricacies of life in black and white. Come and share the magic of 'drawing with light' during SRISHTI-03'.

Star Gazing
Star gazing section of IIT Roorkee is coherent group of young budding astronomers to disseminate the knowledge about the mysteries of the universe.SRISHTI-03 provides a platform for all unveiling the wonders of our cosmos, information to be learned and marveled at.

Web Designing And Software Development
This the newest of all the sections of IIT ROORKEE which gives the students the much needed it education and also provides them an opportunity to develop user friendly applications .the following events are being organized by the web designing and software development

Model
Model section of IIT ROORKEE provides excellent platform for those who intend to make static or working models of various existing machines and plants.SRISHTI-03 embodies élan and opportunity for all the interested .

Electronics
Electronics section of IIT ROORKEE is a group of enthusiastic and innovative hardware designers.SRISHTI-03 provides an excellent platform to all the people with same attitude.

Hostels

Most students at IIT Roorkee live in the hostels, where a large number of extracurricular activities complement the hectic academic routine. The campus has 8 hostels, of which one (Sarojini) is exclusively occupied by girls and one (Rajendra) is exclusively occupied by freshers. Hostels in IIT Roorkee may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students. Students are assigned to hostels by the Institute Administration after their fresher year. The hostels are named after eminent personalities of India and Britain during the Indian Freedom Struggle. The hostels are:

IMG, an acronym for Information Management Group is a students’ group in IIT Roorkee. It provides technical solutions, tools, resources and knowledge in the enhancement of web applications and information resources, and other technical fields such as networking and security.

The Information Management Group, (IMG), is called so, because by concept it works on various programs related to the intellectual and managerial application in diversified disciplines. The group currently is responsible for the development and promotion of Information Resources and for the promotion of the electronic culture in, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.

The team strongly believes in innovation, technology and networking. Strong linkages with academia, workplace professionalism, and in-house training and learning has helped IMG lay the foundation for growing into an organization that contributes to the Institute. As our intellectual horizons enlarged to better fit and address the opportunities of the IT era, we grew in several directions.

Our work has spanned a range of activities, from strategy consulting and system integration services to offshore development centers for some of the most sophisticated software development in the world.

Students Clubs

Students Clubs is a family of three clubs viz. Alkanada Club, Postgraduates Club and Undergraduates Club. The club which was previously known as the UGES (Under Graduates Engineering Students Club), is abode for sports junkies and has stood its ground for about 50 years and deserves a special mention. The students clubs house all the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom, Chess & TT. The clubs also have a reading room with plethora of newspapers and magazines. Each of the clubs have a TV room with a seating capacity of 100 and provide great atmosphere for watching interesting matches and not so interesting soap operas. Cultural Society

"The Cul-Soc", as it is popularly referred to as, is a student body which is responsible for all the cultural events in the Institute round the year. It comprises of seven sections which take care of the varied fields of cultural events. There are three performing on stage sections and four off stage sections as listed below:

AUDIO SECTION: It is the section which makes the voice of the cultural society audible, be it a Choreo program or a Music section presentation.

CHOREOGRAPHY SECTION: It organizes the dance & choreography programs happens to be the most vibrant section of the society.

DRAMATICS SECTION: It is the section which has been staging plays of unbeatable standard since its inception and is known for its discipline and order.

LIGHT SECTION: This section illuminates all the stage shows done by the society. All the performing sections are in dark without the Light section.

LITERARY SECTION: It keeps ticking the score board of cultural performance throughout the year with its brain storming and witty events.

MUSIC SECTION: The section which has been bringing the range of melodies from Indian classical to Western hard rock.

PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT SECTION: This most nascent section of the society was conceived to take care of all the offstage tasks before and after any event. Himalayan Explorer's Club

The Mountaineering & Trekking Club, founded in 1971, was the forerunner of the Himalayan Explorers' Club (HEC). Between 1971 & 1974 the Institute Sports Association nurtured the Mountaineering & Trekking Club which fostered all mountaineering, trekking and outward bound activities amongst science, engineering and professional student community of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. In July 1975 the first major high altitude expedition in the Himalayas was organized successfully in joint collaboration with the Nainital Mountaineering Club, Nainital. With effect from the academic session of 1975-76, the Mountaineering and Trekking Club was rechristened as the Himalayan Explorers' Club (HEC). Between July 1976 and August 1977 the HEC organized a series of three major expeditions in the Garhwal Himalayas (to Mt. Rudragaigra (19500 ft) in July 1976, to Mt. Thelu (20,000 ft) in October 1976 and to Mt. Kedar Dome (23,000 ft) in June 1977) in which as many as 35 students of the University of Roorkee participated.

With effect from the academic session of 1978-79, the Himalayan Explorers' Club was accorded the status of a separate functional body. As an independent body, HEC was restructured and to start with had three different sections:

1. The High Adventure Center 2. The Region Development Center and 3. The Conditioning And Training Center

In its enlarged form as of today, HEC encompasses three more sections. They are:

4. The Unarmed Combat Training Section 5. The Rovering Section 6. The Rangering Section

In addition to organizing mountaineering and high altitude trekking expeditions, rock and ice craft training camps, HEC has during the last ten years pioneered in the field of organizing a new generation of Himalayan expeditions which seek to combine high adventure feats with a whole range of specialized creative endeavors in the Himalayas. Watch Out News Magazine

Watch Out is the official students' news magazine of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. It has its origin dating back to the year 1993 when Harpreet Singh Khanduja and a few friends of his came up with a novel idea of a newsletter in order to complain against a snake which happened to sneak into the rooms of Govind Bhawan.

Ten years down, Watch Out is now a part of the IIT-R ethos with every event on campus, however insignificant, finding a place in its pages.

In order to achieve these unparalleled results over the last decade,WONA (Watch out News Agency) clubs itself into 5 sections: Web Cell, The Editorial Board, The News Bureau, The Finance Section and The Design Board.

Kshitij

IITR is all about innovative ideas and interesting concepts. The library is no exception. The library has a wall magazine to tickle the literary tastes of all the myriad people who visit the library and want to take a break from the hard and taxing work of research.

Kshitij was born on 14th September 1992 and is packed with poems and articles by the students of IITR. It is entirely managed and edited by the students. LION: The Annual Magazine of IIT Roorkee

The Institute magazine expresses the opinions of the students on wide spectrum of issues and is an ideal medium for the student community to put forth its ideas on various issues.

The annual issue is packed with poems, stories and anecdotes which make for great reading.

History The Institute has a rich history and the magazine is no exception.It was started in June 1931, and was entirely edited and managed by the students.Ever since its inception, it has been a popular medium for their literary and journalistic efforts.
