Encyclopedia : I : IN : IND : Indian River Community College
Indian River Community College (IRCC) was originally established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College located in St. Lucie County, Florida. IRCC moved to its current address in 1963 after the city of Fort Pierce, Florida donated 87 acres (352,000 m²) of land to the institution. Not long thereafter, the Board of Trustees decided a name more fitting of the College's service to the community was needed, and it was renamed to Indian River Community College in 1970. Within the confines of the College, IRCC is also referred to as The River; the school mascot is the Pioneer.
IRCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate Degree, however the institution offers additional educational programs such as Technical Certificates and Applied Technology Diplomas. The institution also offers an Adult High School Program that allows adults that have not graduated high school to continue earning credits that may be counted towards their completion of the General Education Diploma (GED). IRCC also participates in the dual enrollment state program to allow students to take college classes while in a public high school at a discount. They host the Clark Advanced Learning Center a technology based high school as a joint venture between the Martin County School District and IRCC.
Indian River Community College is known within other Community Colleges for being a trend-setting College. It has a highly active student body with extremely successful athletic programs such as their Swimming & Diving teams. Additionally, the College is often modeled by other community colleges.
