Indira Point
Encyclopedia : I : IN : IND : Indira Point
Indira Point (formerly known as Pygmalion Point and for a brief period of time as India Point) is situated on the island of Great Nicobar in the Nicobar Islands, eastern Indian Ocean, and it represents the southernmost point of land in the territory of India. The point is located in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Although Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent itself, Indira Point was the furthest south on Indian soil until the tsunami generated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake reclaimed most of its area submerged into the sea. Geologists however have stated that the sea is slowly starting to retreat back to the original position, which would enable the resurfacing of Indira point where the lighthouse is partially submerged under sea.
