Infiltration capacity

Encyclopedia : I : IN : INF : Infiltration capacity

Infiltration capacity, in soil science, is the measure of a soil's surface permeability and ability to admit infiltrating water. This is significant in the fields of ecology, geology, and particularly hydrology, in the maintenance of watersheds, and in the prediction of flooding and soil erosion. Infiltration capacity is higher in coarser textured soils and in soils permeated by macropores (eg. from plant roots), but is dramatically lower on hydrophobic soils.
