Infosys Technologies Limited (NASDAQ: [INFY]) is an information technology (IT) services, solutions and consulting corporation founded in Pune, India in 1981. Currently headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka, it operates eight development centers in India and has over 30 offices in 20 other nations. In fiscal year 2006 annual revenues exceeded US $2.15 billion, with over 52,000 employees worldwide. Infosys is one of India's largest IT companies and its headquarters at Electronics City, Bangalore, is one of the largest IT campuses in the world.

Infosys was founded in July 2, 1981 by seven software professionals. In 1999 Infosys attained a SEI-CMM Level 5 ranking and became the first Indian company to be listed on NASDAQ. In 2001 it was rated "Best Employer in India" by Business Today, and in 2002 Business World named Infosys "India's Most Respected Company".

History

Infosys was started in 1981, in the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India. A team of seven experienced software professionals, led by N. R. Narayana Murthy(NRN) promoted the company. They brought into the company their wide experience, having handled projects in developed countries like United States, Europe and Canada. MICO was their first client.

Their initial foray into the US market was through a company called Data Basics Corp. as a “body-shop” or on-site developer of software for US customers. Later, in 1987, Infosys formed a joint venture with Kurt Salmon, Associates to handle marketing in the US.

Besides its headquarters, Infosys has offices in Atlanta, Beijing, Bellevue, Berkeley Heights, Bhubaneshwar, Brussels, Chandigarh, Charlotte, Chennai, Detroit, Frankfurt, Fremont, Hong Kong, Hyderabad, Lake Forest, Lisle, London, Mangalore, Mauritius, Melbourne, Milano, Mohali, Mumbai, Mysore, New Delhi, Paris, Phoenix, Plano, Prague, Pune, Quincy, Reston, Shanghai, Sharjah, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Sydney, Thiruvananthapuram(Trivandrum), Tokyo, Toronto, Utrecht and Zurich.

India

In India there are Infosys development centers located at Electronics City (Bangalore), Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Mangalore, Mysore, Mohali (near Chandigarh) and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Bangalore campus is the site of the corporate headquarters of Infosys. It is located at Electronics City on the outskirts of Bangalore city. More than 15,000 software professionals work at the Bangalore campus. It is usual for foreign dignitaries visiting Bangalore to make a visit to the campus.

Right outside Mysore a major campus is still under development. It will be an important educational centre with the ability to train up to 4,000 students at a time. Courses will be held there for the induction of new employees and the further training of employees of all levels up to top management.

At the Pune development center a second phase of construction underway covers an area of 110 acres (450,000 m²) and, when completed, will have a total capacity of 25,000 professionals.

Finacle, a banking software product, is the universal banking solution from Infosys. As of November 2005, it has been deployed in various banking institutions in 47 countries around the world.

Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award

[Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award] is a technology award started by The Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania and Infosys in 2002. This award recognizes enterprises and individuals who have transformed their businesses and the society leveraging information technology. Some of the past winners have been Samsung, Amazon.com, RBS and ING Direct.

Any company or individual can apply directly or nominate others. The winners are decided by an independent jury comprising some of the best known thought leaders in IT.

WIBTA is one of the few global business awards combining the education and research strengths of a world class academic institution with the business acumen of a world leader in information technology services.

InStep

[InStep] is Infosys' internship program offered to university students who are from many parts of the world. The bulk of the interns work in the main campus at Electronics City, Bangalore, though a few are available globally. The interns are offered a stipend, free airfare, accommodation, food, and city transportation. Although they officially mention deadlines for applications, they recruit all year round. Each intern is usually assigned to one mentor. They are able to work in many areas of the company including Corporate Planning with top management. The premise of the internship is to promote the corporate brand globally while interns gain business or technical work experience.

Infosys Foundation

In 1996, Infosys created the [Infosys Foundation] in the state of Karnataka, operating in the areas of health care, social rehabilitation and rural uplift, education, arts and culture. Since then, this foundation has spread to the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and Punjab. The Infosys Foundation is headed by Mrs. Sudha Murthy, wife of Chairman Narayana Murthy.

Infosys Acquisitions

In 2003 - 04 Infosys has acquired 100% equity of Expert Information Services Pty Limited, Australia (Expert).

Recently Infosys acquired the 23% stake Citibank had in its BPO offshoot Progeon, making it totally under its organisation enabling Infosys/Progeon to now look at other BPO deals in the banking sector apart from Citibank.
