Injured reserve is a special sports reserve list for professional teams to use if a player is injured and unable to play for an extended time. It is used so that that player does not take up a roster spot. The length of time a player must stay on the injured reserve list before playing again varies from league to league. In baseball, a similar list called the disabled list is used. In the NFL, if a player is placed on injured reserve, the player is disabled for the entire season.
