Inkerman

Encyclopedia : I : IN : INK : Inkerman

Inkerman (Ukrainian: Інкерман, Russian: , ), also sometimes transliterated as Inkermann, is a city in Crimea, Ukraine. It is situated 5 kilometres to the east of Sevastopol, at the mouth of the Chernaya River. Administratively, Inkerman subordinates to Sevastopol municipality (which is not a part of the surrounding Autonomous Republic of Crimea).

During the Soviet era it was known as Belokamensk, but has since reverted to its pre-Soviet name.

The area has been inhabited since ancient times. A cave monastery of St. Clement was built at Inkerman between the 7th-9th century. The monastery was destroyed during the Soviet era but has now been restored and brought back into use. In the 14th century, the Kalamita fortress – now ruined – was built on the strategic heights overlooking Inkerman.

The same strategic considerations brought the town to worldwide attention in 1854 during the Crimean War, when Inkerman became the scene of the Battle of Inkerman and the Battle of Chernaya River. Both were victories for the forces of France and the United Kingdom over Russia.

Since Soviet times, a large underground weapons storage of the Black Sea Fleet is situated beneath a rock in Inkerman area. The storage became overloaded and abandonded in 1970s after an explosion that damaged the facility but did not detonate all its stockpiles. However, no efforts to secure the site have been made until 1990s when local residents began salvaging explosives (which caused number of deaths). Sappers of the Ukrainian Army started to extract and demolish outdated ammunitions in 2000 under a special government programme.

Inkerman has since largely returned to its pre-war obscurity; as well as the former village now serving principally as a suburb of Sevastopol, the surrounding area is the centre of one of the major Crimean winerys which uses the Inkerman label.
