Inspector Gadget 2 is a Walt Disney Pictures film released directly to VHS and DVD in March of 2003. It was based upon the Inspector Gadget character created by DiC Entertainment, and is a direct-to-video sequel to the 1999 Disney film Inspector Gadget. It was filmed in Brisbane, Australia.
Plot
Inspector Gadget (French Stewart) and his Gadgetmobile (voiced by D.L. Hughley) are keeping an eye out for threats. Gadget goes overboard, arresting an elderly motorist for going 25.3 mph in a 25-mph zone, without a driver's license. At the police department, Gadget sees his niece, Penny (Caitlin Wachs), who should be at school. Penny wants to solve mysteries with her uncle, but Gadget tells her that she is too young. Chief Quimby (Mark Mitchell) tells Gadget that he is making a mistake, because it is his mother who is in jail. Quimby tells Gadget to remember why he has just arrested a bunch of Girl Scouts, who are selling cookies.
Meanwhile, at Riverton Prison, Dr. Claw (Tony Martin) makes a daring escape from prison. After Claw's escape, Mayor Wilson (Sigrid Thornton) creates G2, a female Gadget-type robot that can function normally. Gadget begins to fall in love with her.
At an abandoned bowling factory, Claw tells his henchmen, McKibble and Brick, that he plans to steal some gold from the United States Treasury. To do that, he must have fuel cells, a laser, and a super ruby to complete the device.
Gadget makes repeated attempts to look for and stop Claw, but is continually foiled by his own bumbling and gadgetry glitches. Chief Quimby becomes increasingly more frustrated with Gadget's misadventures. Brain gets evidence from one of Claw's minions when they steal the laser.
Quimby finally fires Gadget. When Penny realizes that her uncle was fired and asks if there's anything she can do to help, Gadget tells that she is still too young. But Penny decides to examine the evidence on her own.
Claw has his plan in motion, but he still needs a super ruby for the machine. Meanwhile, Gadget is busy getting fired from every job he tries.
Penny finds Claw's hideout at an abandoned bowling factory. She infiltrates the hideout, but Claw captures her. At the gala, Gadget gets a job as a limo driver who opens doors for the guests. Inside the gala, Claw activates the laughing gas to keep the people busy, and steals the super ruby. After G2's failure, Quimby decides to deactivate G2.
Gadget goes to the police department to reactivate G2. Brain tells them that Claw has kidnapped Penny. Outside, Claw acivates his machine, which was hidden in a truck. The time has come to get the gold from the United States treasury.
At the treasury, Claw orders his minions to attack Gadget and G2 so he can get away. Gadget and G2 decide to switch chips in order to make Gadget work perfectly, leaving G2 to deal with the glitches. Gadget chases after Claw, who is escaping in an ice cream truck, but Claw drops Penny off the truck with explosives attached to her so that Gadget has to go after her instead of stopping Claw. At the bridge, Gadget stops Claw with bubble gum. When Gadget orders Claw to put his hand (and claw) up, Claw gets away in a rocket-like escape pod, saying his popular catchphrase from the show ("I'll get you next time, Gadget! Next time!").
Gadget and G2 put everything back to normal. Later, at the police department, Quimby congratulates the two for foiling Claw's scheme.
Notes
- True to his character, Gadget is absolutely clueless.
- Dr. Claw's face was never seen, except his mouth.
