The International Congress on Medieval Studies is a conference for Medieval scholars sponsored by Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
It is considered to be one of the largest annual conferences in this subject, and typically has more than two thousand registered partipants. The congress is usually held during the first weekend of May, running from Thursday to Sunday. About six hundred sessions that take place during the congress, with about three or four papers given per session. The people who give these papers come from a wide variety of backgrounds - most are professors and graduate students, but others include fiction authors, undergraduate students and people who are interested in the Middle Ages. Many of the sessions are sponsored by academic associations, universities or publishers, while others are arranged by ad-hoc groups which are interested in a particular topic. There have been some complaints that the congress allows for too many papers to be given, since it makes it difficult for a participant to attend all the sessions they want to, while others argue that the quality of some papers is not adequate.
Highlights of the congress include the two plenary sessions, the exhibits hall (where various publishers display new books dealing with medieval studies), and the Pseudo Society session. The congress is also popular for its evening parties.
In 2006, the 41st International Congress on Medieval Studies was held.
