Interstate 295 (Virginia)
Encyclopedia : I : IN : INT : Interstate 295 (Virginia)
Interstate 295 (abbreviated I-295) is an eastern bypass of Richmond and Petersburg as well as a northern bypass of Richmond. I-295 measures 52.56 miles (84.59km) in length. The southern terminus is a junction with Interstate 95 southeast of Petersburg. Interstate 295 then intersects Interstate 64 a short distance south of Richmond. Interstate 295 has another junction with Interstate 95 north of Richmond and continues westward to its other terminus at a second junction with Interstate 64.
In effect, Interstate 295 serves as a bypass route for both Interstate 64 and Interstate 95. It also performs crossover duty for travelers between Washington (reached by Interstate 95) and southeastern Virginia (reached by Interstate 64).
The Varina-Enon Bridge carries Interstate 295 across the James River near Dutch Gap between Chesterfield County and Henrico County. It was opened to traffic in July 1990, and was the second major cable-stayed bridge in the United States.
