Interstate 88 (abbreviated I-88) is an interstate highway entirely within the U.S. state of New York. Its western end is at an intersection with Interstate 81 in Binghamton, New York; its eastern end is at an intersection with Interstate 90 in Schenectady, New York. Originally, in the 70's, plans for this highway called for a longer road than what exists today, stretching into New England almost to the Atlantic Coast.

I-88 was suppossed to go past the New York State Thruway, through the Albany Metropolitan area (the Crosstown Arterial section of NY 7 in Schenectady, and "Alt" Route 7, were to be part of the extension), up to Bennington, Vermont (the U.S. 7 interchange and Bennington Bypass are remnants of the extension plans. Only recently has the Bennington Bypass been built on the original highway grading.), through to Manchester, New Hampshire (I-293 and NH 101 are part of the original plans), and eventually end at I-95 south of Portsmouth.

Intersections with other interstates

2006 Flood

As a result of the June 2006 flooding in upstate New York and northeastern Pennsylvania, Carr's Creek washed out a 150-foot long section of Interstate 88 near Sidney, New York. Around 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, two trucks from different directions drove into the chasm, apparently unaware of it, killing both drivers. David Swingle, 42, of Waverly, New York, who was driving westbound, was identified shortly after the accident. The east-bound trucker is said to be Patrick O'Connell, 55, of Lisbon, Maine, based on his truck and some GPS data, though his body is yet to be found.

The New York State Department of Transportation plans to replace the section of I-88 by early fall. In the mean time, New York State Route 7 will be used as a detour around the affected area.
