Irapuato

Irapuato is a city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, lying on the Irapuato River, a tributary of the Lerma River. According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 440,134, living in an area of 845,16 km² which is 2.8 % of the area of the state. The city is known for its strawberries and the raising of pigs and cattle.
In the pre-hispanic era it was inhabited by the Tarascans (Purépecha) and it was named "Jiricuato", which meant "the place with houses".
