It's A Scream

Encyclopedia : I : IT : ITS : It's A Scream

It's A Scream (also known as Scream) is a brand of pub chain in the UK. It is aimed at the student market, and the public house establishments it runs are mostly near to universities. The original name came from a poster sometimes found on walls of student rooms, of a painting from 1893 entitled The Scream, by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. This painting was formerly shown on some pub signs of the It's A Scream chain. It's A Scream also has a loyalty card scheme known as The Yellow Card available only to university students at a cost of several pounds which entitles students a discount on several drinks. The 'Scream' pub franchise is one of a number of UK pub chains maligned by drinkers for it's 'tacky' promotional schemes and lack of atmosphere and character. Scream pubs are often regarded as being 'cheap for a reason', namely poor management leading to limited availibility of advertised drinks and food, as well as poorly maintained facilities, especially toilets. Other derided UK public house chains include Wetherspoons and Hogshead

The pub chain began in the mid-1990s. It is owned by Mitchells and Butlers, and the head office is in Birmingham.
