Italian ice can have different meanings, depending on the geographical region.

In most European countries, Italian ice is synonymous with gelato, a type of ice cream made mainly from milk.United States
In the USA, Italian ice is also called (Italian) water ice and is synonymous with granita, granite and slush. It is a frozen dessert made by mixing flavorings (typically fruit juices but also coffee and chocolate) with ice. Italian ice, unlike shaved ice products, is very smooth. The flavoring is mixed into the ice before or during freezing, instead of being added at the point of sale. Special machines are often used to blend it as it freezes. It is best stored at very cold temperatures near -20F (near -30C), and served around -5F to -10F (-20 to -23C). Italian ice can be made at home with a hand blender or an ice cream maker.
