Iyi-uwa

Encyclopedia : I : IY : IYI : Iyi-uwa

Iyi-uwa, as described in Otu/Otwa or Ghoutuo folklore, is described as an object to which an Ogbanje spirit is tied to bring it back to Earth after dieing.

Typically the iyi-uwa can be a stone, but it can also be a doll, some sort of omen or offering buried.

The shaman of the tribe would question the ogbanje and may perform several rituals before the ogbanje departs, and force it to show the shaman where the iyi-uwa is located.

The iyi-uwa is then located, destroyed, and the ogbanje can no longer die and constantly be reborn.
