J I Thornycroft was a shipbuilding firm started by John Isaac Thornycroft in the 19th century. It merged in 1966 with Vosper & Co. to form Vosper Thornycroft.

History

The firm started out as shipbilding yard on the River Thames.

Thornycrofts Chiswick yard built the fist instance of what would become the torpedo boat, the Rap for Norway in 1873. This was followed by HMS Lightning for the Royal Navy in 1877.

In the 1900s it moved to Southampton. The first ship built by them for the Royal Navy was the Tribal class destroyer HMS Tartar.
