Jaakko Keränen

Encyclopedia : J : JA : JAA : Jaakko Keränen

Jaakko Keränen (born 14 July, 1980), better known as SkyJake, is the lead developer on the open source Doomsday Engine, a system for playing a series of classic first-person shooters such as jDoom, jHeretic and jHexen. The j prefix for the games was derived from Jaakko's own first name and also extended to jPacks, packages for the Doomsday Engine games containing extra graphics, sounds, music, effects and models.

While computing has dominated his presence on the Internet, Jaakko professes interest in synth music, and 3D modeling (some of which has found its way into the jGames). Having been playing with computers in various forms from a young age Jaakko began using the C programming language at the age of thirteen in 1993. Jaakko started a series of projects such as jakeformula (1998), a Formula One simulator, the name foreshadowing Jaakko's use of his own name in later games.

It was shortly after this period Doomsday was initially developed; originally based off of the most advanced version of the classic id Software Doom engine, that of HeXen. Despite a lull in activity while Jaakko completed his national service, Doomsday became one of the most respected Doom source ports around; noted for its advanced graphics and sound engine.

In 2004 Jaakko announced his new version of Doomsday (2.0), dubbed Hawthorne.
