Jacana is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, situated north of the Western Ring Road and south of Camp Road. The suburb has its own railway station.

History

Jacana was first founded by white europeans in the mid 1800's, with the settlement of Melbourne in 1835, however, it was not established until Colonel Alfred Holmes (later a hero in the Boer war), moved there in an attempt to break free from the Melbourne city life, and wanted live in his own farmhouse with his family in peace. Due to his affection for this area, he named it 'Jacana', after the Koorie word 'Jaka-na', meaning "golden land".

Jacana's Current concerns

Although having a railway station, as well as other facilities, Jacana is by far the poorest suburb in Melbourne, with an estimated 12% of residents homeless. Alcohol and Drug rated have skyrocketed, increasing by over 5% in the past year, and among the state of Victoria's highest. Crime rates are also increasingly large, mainly due to the large content of poverty in the area. There have been many people murdered for openly exposing that they possess currency and valuables as little as 5 cents see Australian currency.

The People

The People of Jacana are from varied ethnicities, with the majority of them being White Australian. Other groups include: Middle Eastern 33%, Vietnamese 19%, Maori 12%, and the rest 2%. A high percentage of the population are on unemployment benefits, while others simply beg on the streets. [media]
