Born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 16, 1849, James McIlvaine Riley entered the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in the fall of 1866. Riley was always a favorite with classmates, Riley was a good public speaker and athlete. He was a member of VMI's first baseball team in the fall of 1866. James was second baseman and captain of the team. James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles and James MacIlvaine Riley soon became close friends and founded Sigma Nu Fraternity. Riley was elected the first Commander of Alpha chapter and served as the first Regent of Sigma Nu fraternity which he was for ten years. On May 6th, 1911 James McIlvaine Riley entered Chapter Eternal and is buried in a plot in Bellefontaine Cemetery near the St. Louis Alumni chapter.
