Kagero was the lead ship of her class of destroyer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her name means "Glimmering Spring Air", or "The Shimmering Mist that Rises from the Earth on a Hot Day".
On 8 May 1943, Kagero made a troop transport run to Kolombangara. When leaving Vila, she was disabled by a mine, then suffered further damage in air attacks due to near-misses and strafing. She finally sank southwest of Kolombangara ().
