Jeremy Barnes is best known as the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel. He has also worked and recorded with Bright Eyes, Bablicon, Beirut, The Gerbils, and Broadcast. He has toured as a one-man solo act, also performing as a drummer with the groups he toured with.
A Hawk and a Hacksaw
Barnes has recorded somewhat experimental projects under the A Hawk and a Hacksaw name. His first album, a self-titled affair, kept a folksy tone to it, having been recorded in France with a group of Elephant Six bandmates including members of Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, and The Olivia Tremor Control. His second album, Darkness at Noon, is less experimental in tone, relying on accordion, violin, oud, trumpet, tuba, piano. the album ends with the song "portland town," by derroll adams, folk troubadour of the 50's.

Marta Tennae
Barnes recorded a song for a Japanese compilation under the name Marta Tennae in 2001, and shortly thereafter self-released an album under the same name. He is currently crediting his work in Bablicon under the Marta Tennae moniker.

- Jeremy Barnes dropped out of DePaul University to play drums in Neutral Milk Hotel when asked by Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster after a brief audition in Chicago.
