 Jiangmen (江門) (Pengjiang) is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong province in southern China with a population of about 3.8 million.

HistoryThe port of Jiangmen opened to western trade in 1902. One legacy of this period is a historic waterfront district lined with buildings in the treaty port style. The city has an ongoing renewal project which has resulted in the restoration of many of these buildings.Jiangmen was later established as a city in 1951, and then became a prefectural city consisting of the four cities over which it has administrative jurisdiction today. GeographyJiangmen city has an area of 9,260 km². The city is located on the lower reaches of the Xijiang river, in the west of the Pearl River Delta in the south middle of Guangdong Province. It faces the South China Sea in the south and is 100 kilometers away from Guangzhou and Zhuhai by highway.Its land area is about 10,000 square km, one quarter the size of Pearl River Delta. The climate is subtropical with monsoon. Annual average temperature: 21.8 C. EconomyJiangmen was not only selected by the state as a pilot city of a nationwide informationization programme, but also chosen by Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) as a trial city of the Regional Integration for Sustainable Economics (RISE) project. According to "Report on Investment Environment in China 2003" by the World Bank, Jiangmen ranked the forth, after Shanghai, Hangzhou and Dalin, among 23 cities in China under evaluation. Anong various indicators, Jiangmen stands out in infrastructure, labour redundancy, proportion of joint ventures in all firms, informal payment to government, taxation, productivity and investment rate.The economic development strategies within Jiangmen area focuses on one area (the three urban districts) and three lines (south, middle, and north lines). The city will develop four main economic areas: the central urban district of the city, Yinzhou Lake(銀州湖) economic area and economic area along transport axes. Manufacturing industriesSimilar to other cities in western Pearl River Delta, the manufacturing sector plays a significant role in Jiangmen's economy. The pillar industries include the manufacturing of motorcycles, household appliance, electronics, paper, food pocessing, chemical fibres and garments, textiles and stainless steel products. Some worldwide famous brand names include Haojue 125 motorcycle series, Jingling washing machines and Vinda toilet paper.Jiangmen PortJiangmen Port is the second largest river port in Guangdong province. The local government plans to develop a harbour industrial zone with heavy industries such as petrochemical and machinery industries. The local government decides an ocean economy as one of the city's development strategies.TransportationExternal linkMaking use of the Jiangmen Port facilities, Chu Kong Passenger Transport (CKS) connects Jiangmen to Hong Kong (95 nautical miles) with high speed ferry services which take about 2.5 hours, one way.When compared to the sea transport, the development of Jiangmen's landtransport is relatively weak. However, the city retains a key route connection between the southwest region of Guangdong Province, also even the Guangxi Province, and Guangzhou. Internal linkA network of routes is built since the late 1990s to facilitate industrial agglomeration of industrial zones within the city, which are fully supported with infrastructures.CultureJiangmen is the famous hometown of 3.68 million overseas Chinese, who live in 107 countries and regions in the world. Strong oversea connections are found in Jiangmen villages.TourismIn relation to the history of great migration and overseas Chinese culture, lots of histrical heritage such as the fortified multi-story towers (known as "diaolou"碉樓 in Chinese) are valuable to tourists.
