Jiménez

Encyclopedia : J : JI : JIM : Jiménez

Jiménez (archaic Ximénez) is a surname of Spanish origin. Variations of the surname also include Jimenes or Ximenes. In Spanish orthography when the stress of a word falls on the penultimate syllable, and the word ends with either an "N", "S" or vowel, the word needn't carry a diacritic on the vowel of the stressed syllable (in this case é.) In English orthography all variations are commonly written without the diacritic (Jimenez, Ximenez, Jimenes, and Ximenes.)

The most archaic form of the surname Ximénez can be traced to the Navarrese dynasty founded by Sancho Ximénez of the Middle Ages who eventually gained power in Aragón, Sobrarbe and Ribagorza, Castile, and León and Galicia until the last scion (Sancho the Strong) died in 1234.
