João Fernandes (pron. IPA [ʒu'ɐ̃ũ fɨɾ'nɐ̃ðɨʃ]) (?–1505) was a Portuguese landholder and sea explorer.
He owned farmland on the island of Terceira in the Azores island group. The word lavrador (pron. IPA [lɐvɾɐ'ðoɾ]) is Portuguese for "farmer" or "landholder".
Although details of his life are uncertain, Fernandes likely charted the coasts of Southwestern Greenland and of adjacent Northeastern North America around 1498 and gave notice of them in Europe. Those two areas are thus believed to have been named island of the Labrador and land of the Labrador, respectively, after him.
Fernandes is believed to have died in 1505.
