Johanna Schopenhauer

Encyclopedia : J : JO : JOH : Johanna Schopenhauer

Johanna Schopenhauer (July 9, 1766April 17, 1838) was a German author and the mother of Arthur Schopenhauer.

Biography

Johanna Schopenhauer was born in Danzig. She became an author and wrote about her life in her native city. After the annexation of her city by Prussia in 1793, she and her husband moved to Hamburg. Following her husband's death in 1807, she moved to Weimar and belonged to the literary circle surrounding Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The charming coffee shop where she "held court" with authors and intellectuals of her day still stands in front of a statue of Goethe by the opera house square in modern Weimar. When told by Goethe that her son was destined for great things, she objected, claiming that there could not be two geniuses in one family.
