"John A. Young" is Vice Chairman of the Board of Novell since April 1997. Young was acting Chairman of the Novell Board of Directors from August 1996 until April 1997.

John A. Young succeeded William Hewlett as president of Hewlett-Packard in 1977, and as chief executive officer in 1978. In 1992, he retired from his position as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, a position he held for fifteen years. He has had a long association with competitiveness issues, having chaired President Reagan's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness and founded the Council on Competitiveness in 1986. Young is also a director of Affymetrix, Chevron Corporation, International Integration, Inc., Lucent Technology, Smith Kline Beecham plc, and Wells Fargo & Co., and is a member of The Business Council.

Young received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in 1953 where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and an MBA from Stanford University.
